The Month of June
June has 30 days and is the sixth of twelve months in the Gregorian calendar. There are a couple of disputed theories behind where the month of June actually got its name from. Some believe that Juno, the Roman Goddess of bearing children and marriage, is the basis for the month’s name. However, others believe that it was inspired by iuniores, the latin word for “younger ones.”
Nevertheless, both of these theories allude to the fact that June is the month of union or birth. This makes sense considering that much wildlife and nature is born in June. Additionally, June is the official start of summer and the unofficial beginning of “wedding season” in America. Perhaps this is because legend says that it is good luck to get married in the month of June.
Believe it or not, June was not always as we know it today. Depending on which ancient version of the year’s calendar you look to, at different points in history June was the fourth month or even the fifth month of the year. At one point it even only had 29 days. These small inconsistencies are due to two different changes that occurred throughout history. One being that March, or the first month of spring, used to be the first month of the year. The second reason being that in the earliest version of the calendar, there were only ten months.
June has many different birthstones, all of which symbolize long life and good health. These birthstones are the moonstone, the pearl, and Alexandrite. Moonstones receive their name for their marbleized texture (similar to an Opal) which remind some of craters on the moon’s surface. Depending on their chemical makeup, some moonstones maintain more of a blue iridescent color, while others seem more white and opaque.
Pearls, on the other hand, are always opaque and traditionally white in color. While pearls can symbolize innocence and purity, they are also popular to give as wedding gifts. This makes sense when considering that June is often considered the month of marriage.
In addition to being one of the birthstones for June, Alexandrite is also traditionally given as a gift for the 55th year of marriage. Alexandrite stones are extremely rare and come in iridescent purple and turquoise.
The official flowers of June are the rose and the honeysuckle. While there are many different colors of roses, red are the most popular, symbolizing love. Honeysuckles, which also symbolize love, are unique for their sweet honey nectar center and tube shaped flower blossoms.
